Fall 2012

PROJECT STATEMENT
Hong Kong’s Urban Renewal Authority is undertaking the complete re-development of Kwun Tong Town Center. The project involves relocating 1600 households with an estimated population of around 5000 people and displacing about 500 shops and hawker stalls.
The existing buildings, built in the 1960’s have been designated for demolition due to their dilapidated condition. The planning for the area has been in progress since 1968 and a schematic master-plan was produced for public consultation in 2007.
The aim of the design project is to look at alternative strategies for the town center project.
First question is what constitutes an urban center and the role and function a district town center such as Kwun Tong may provide for the local and wider community.
Issues include a consideration of: political development pressures, the center vs the periphery, old vs new, infrastructural nodes, publicity & privacy; temporality.
