PROJECT STATEMENT
‘Change is the only constant of urbanism. This statement has of course its overriding exception: man is the other constant of urbanism.’
Shadrach Woods / Joachim Pfeuffer (1968): Project 6
How to introduce these two constants in a cultural vision that will help to shape the city of Helsinki?
With a simple radical move the indoor exhibition space is transformed into a public platform stretched over the site. A corner of this platform is tilted as a gesture for arrival of both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Public squares are drawn on the platform to extend the city fabric.
-
Built spaces: 2-storey pavilions with painted marine plywood cladding. Timber primary structure. Insulated glazing minimized and provided only where required. Standing seam aluminum roof system on timber structure.
-
Deck: 1.5m raised timber platform with access to services under.
-
Lighting: Minimized and low level. Primarily for deck visibility and safety.
